Just Do It

“Just Do It”, one of the world’s most recognizable slogans, meant to encourage everyone to abandon excuses and engage. With two of the three statewide benchmarks for COVID-19 spread now in the “moderate” category for Maricopa County and numbers trending down, there is reason for hope. This week, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, following the lead of the CDC, released updated guidance for K-12 schools in the setting of the pandemic (K-12-Schools-and-Childcare-Facilities).

Essential components of the guidelines are: The consistent implementation of mitigation strategies, the monitoring of indicators of illness and transmission, the identification and isolation of those ill with COVID and quarantine of exposed close contacts, and the vaccination of teachers and staff. It is a testament to our hard work, Home & School, that we can say we have done, and continue to do, everything set forth in these “new” guidelines.

Because of this, we can look forward to a spring filled with activities that define OLMC: Stations of the Cross, Trek Through the Desert, May Crowning and Graduation. We will still have guidelines and restrictions, but having committed to getting our children back to school in August, we know how to do it. It is good to be working on remaining open rather than to contemplate how to open. When we look for encouragement to go forth, perhaps we should remember the shoe company that coined the phrase “Just Do It”, Nike, derives its name from the Greek word “nika” which means “conquers”. Nika is often seen with the letters ICXC- the traditional abbreviation for the Greek words for Jesus Christ.

ICXC NIKA - Jesus Christ Conquers All! Indeed, He does and will!
